PRE-CONFERENCE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS;

(Wednesday, 11/12/2008 Classes)

 PC1 SO YOU THINK YOU WANT TO BE A FLIGHT CREW MEMBER; Scott Smith, RN, BSN, BA, CFRN, CEN, NREMT-P; Kevin Burkholder; Cost $175; Many EMS providers across the state routinely express interest in becoming flight medics or nurses. Yet, often these same individuals are unsure what steps to take to prepare for a career in transport medicine. This two day pre-conference will serve to introduce advanced ALS providers to the "real world" of critical care transports and the demands associated with caring for the sickest of the sick. The program will provide an introduction to a variety of topics including transport modes, legal issues, transport physiology, advanced pharmacology, hemodynamics, advanced cardiac care, advanced airway management, mechanical ventilation, shock states, sepsis, and clinical decision making. A section on career planning for those aspiring to be involved in critical care transport will also be included. The program will conclude with a series of small group scenarios and case studies culminating in a real-time patient management scenario in the Human Patient Simulator. This course will also serve the CCEMT-P, who needs to recertify, with much needed critical care transport education hours. Limit=16

Using a variety of human simulator models (mannequins, plastic models, animal tissue preparations, etc.), the curriculum emphasizes endotracheal intubation under difficult conditions. When ET intubation is impossible or unsuccessful, a variety of problem-solving concepts, techniques, landmark devices are used, including needle and surgical cricothyrotomy. The Difficult Airway Lab (including the SURGICAL AIRWAY TUTORIAL) provides a solid foundation for solving the vast majority of real-life difficult airway problems. It also allows the participant to proceed with confidence to more advanced work in the next lab module (AATSL). Limit=24
